Swiss Federal Council Approves AI Implementation in Legal Proceedings

AI guidelines reshape Swiss court procedures under human oversight

The Swiss Federal Council has approved guidelines for the implementation of artificial intelligence in legal and administrative proceedings. The guidelines, developed in collaboration with the Federal Supreme Court and cantonal authorities, establish parameters for using AI in document analysis, case management, and preliminary decision support while maintaining human oversight of all final determinations.

The initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of Switzerland's legal system while ensuring the accuracy and fairness of proceedings. Implementation will begin in selected cantonal courts in late 2025, with nationwide adoption expected by 2027. The guidelines specifically address data privacy concerns, algorithmic transparency, and mechanisms to prevent bias in AI-assisted legal processes.
